High Court Gives Split Decisions On Ten Commandments

SUPREME COURT -- There have been two closely-watched rulings on church-state separation.

The Supreme Court said Monday that Ten Commandments displays in two Kentucky courthouses cross the line between church and state.

The justices -- in a 5-4 vote -- rejected those displays, saying they promote a religious message.
But the justices declined to prohibit all displays in court buildings or on government property. They said some displays, such as the one in their own courtroom, would be permissible if they're portrayed neutrally in order to honor the nation's legal history.
Writing for the majority, Justice David Souter said, "The First Amendment mandates government neutrality between religion and religion, and between religion and non-religion."
He was joined by other members of the court's liberal bloc, Justices Stevens, Ginsburg and Breyer, as well as Sandra Day O'Connor, who provided the swing vote.
Texas Commandments RulingIn its second ruling Monday on displays of the Ten Commandments, the Supreme Court has ruled that displays of the Commandments are allowed on government land.
The justices found that a 6 foot granite monument on the grounds of the Texas Capitol does not cross the line between church and state.
Opponents challenging the monument on the Texas Capitol grounds and Ten Commandments displays in Kentucky courthouses said they are an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion.
In 2003, Roy Moore was removed from office as Alabama's chief justice when he refused to obey a federal judge's order to remove a a Ten Commandments monument from the foyer of the Alabama Judicial Building.
Defenders responded that such displays, including engravings in the Supreme Court's own building, don't establish religion but merely acknowledge the nation's legal heritage.
The justices' ruling could affect thousands of Ten Commandments monuments and displays nationwide.

We need younger justices on the bench...like under 60 yrs of age. Their decision punishes the lower courts and states but they (Supreme Court) keep it (THE BIG TEN) up so they don't have to redecorate their chambers. I call bullshit. I can warp any law to apply to other people but not to myself. Time to go into retirement, your law making days are archaic and flawed, do us all a favor and step down.

Murder Suspect Climbs Atlanta Crane, Won't Come Down
Florida Authorities Say Man is a Suspect in Girlfriend's Killing

ATLANTA -- Atlanta police worked Thursday morning to coax a man who is apparently wanted in Florida on a murder charge down from an 18-story construction crane.

Police have shut down a Buckhead intersection while the man sits atop a crane.
Roads in the city's Buckhead area were closed overnight after Carl Edward Roland, 41, of Clearwater, Fla., climbed to the top of the crane during the start of Wednesday's afternoon rush hour.
Police in Pinellas County, Fla., said the man is a suspect in the death of his girlfriend, Jennifer L. Gonzalez, 36, whose badly beaten body was found Tuesday in a retention pond.
The man climbed up the crane, which was at a construction site of a new building, at about 5 p.m. and would not come down. The man was about 160 feet above the ground. At least four police officers were positioned 30 to 40 feet away from the man on the crane.
During the standoff Wednesday, the man walked along the crane, sat on it and reclined on it while negotiators tried to get him to calm down. Police negotiators tried to talk to the man throughout the night as he contemplated committing suicide, said Atlanta police spokesman Sgt. John Quigley
At one point, he apparently threw his wallet down to police.

Carl Edward Roland "It was his ID and his credit card and library card that he was throwing down," said Chris Voisey, who is visiting from Los Angeles and was eating at a restaurant as the event began unfolding. "They actually landed on Peachtree Street."
Voisey said he believes the man is crying out for attention.
"He wants to talk to someone," Voisey said. "He's obviously looking for a way out of something."

Robber Found Shot To Death Outside Charlotte Apartments

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Police are trying to figure out exactly what happened at the Mereview Court Apartments off Sharon Lakes Road Saturday morning.
A robber was found shot to death outside an apartment.
Police tell us a person inside that apartment is in the hospital after being shot by that robber and another person inside the apartment was stabbed.
It all happened around 5:30 Saturday morning.
Police say this part of South Charlotte has become the new hot spot for crime.
Some neighbors told Eyewitness News they want to move because of the recent increase in crime.

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -- A military jury in North Carolina has convicted an Army sergeant of murder and attempted murder in a grenade and rifle attack on his comrades in Kuwait as they prepared to invade Iraq. The court-martial determined that Sgt. Hasan Akbar murdered the two officers who were killed in the attack two years ago. Fourteen other troops were wounded.
The jury's unanimous guilty verdict means Akbar could be sentenced to death. A sentencing hearing will be held on Monday.
The jury deliberated the verdict for more than two hours Thursday. Akbar, 33, stood at attention as the verdict was read by the colonel who headed the jury panel, chewing his lip but giving no other outward sign of emotion.
It's the first time since Vietnam that an American has been convicted of killing fellow soldiers during wartime. Akbar's defense lawyers didn't deny the Muslim soldier carried out the assault. They said he was insane during the attack at a desert camp of the 101st Airborne Division in Kuwait.
Prosecutors said he was sane and that the crime was premeditated.

IRAQI LAWMAKERS DEMAND APOLOGY FROM U.S.

Iraqi lawmakers adjourned in protest Tuesday and demanded an apology after a Shiite legislator linked to a radical anti-American cleric tearfully said he was handcuffed and humiliated at a U.S. checkpoint. It was the third consecutive day that Iraq's interim parliament was sidetracked from its job of setting up a government and writing a constitution. Beyond the sandbags and blast walls of the U.S.-protected Green Zone, where the National Assembly meets, at least a dozen Iraqis were killed and more than 60 wounded in a series of attacks, including two that targeted the army and its recruits.

Give me a break, you FEEL you got a little roughed up at a checkpoint. Can you blame the guys for being overly cautious? How many troops have lost? 1,000+? Being ex-military myself I applaud these soldiers for doing what they felt was best for their own protection. These guys, because they are careful and wary, are going back to base ALIVE at the end of the day. We pray they make it home. In America, a police officer can legally pull you over, and if he feels he has just cause for his own safety, can detain you by using handcuffs and placing you in the back of the patrol car until he feels there is no threat. I have had this done when I was going hunting once, I was not angry or upset...Because I had nothing to be afraid. If you're not guilty, don't run. After this fine officer had checked my vehicle and verified my I.D. and saw I was within state regulations for firearm transportation he promptly released me, warned me to slow down and wished me a good day. I could have hollered he roughed me up but I didn't, his focus was going home at the end of the day alive....And he did.

My apology to the poor Iraqi who got "roughed up":

Dear Iraqi,

"We are so freaking sorry that you felt violated. Far be it from us to be careful defending your desert crap hole country. To show our sincerity, we will now pack it up and go home and leave you with your desert wasteland. The next time your country gets taken over by a cruel dictator and his psychopathic sons feel free to do something about it yourself and don't come running to us you sorry bastard".

I hope that he gets this apology and it satisfies his wounded pride. Jackass.
